For me, living in Washington, DC, the start of spring is marked by the bloom of the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin. This year, peak bloom occurred a bit later than usual (April 11 rather than in late March). The bloom was delayed by an unusually cold winter. However, when the bloom did finally arrive, it was spectacular.
