Colorado Springs and Garden of the Gods

In August, I traveled to Colorado Springs on vacation with my family. We had a great time. I normally associate Colorado Spring with winter attractions, but it's a great place to visit in the summer as well. For me, the biggest draw was the Garden of the Gods, which is located on the outskirts of the city. The place is accessible and gorgeous. I took quite a few photos. Above is the Garden of the Gods at dusk. Below are a couple of photos taken during the daytime and then one at dawn.

We also visited Pikes Peak while we were there. The base of the mountain is about 10 miles from downtown Colorado Springs, so it was very close. The peak of the mountain is 14,115 feet above sea level, so it is quite high. We took a cog railway up to the peak, which turned out to be a great way to travel to the top. At the peak, there's a large visitor center where they serve donuts made at high altitude and other tasty snacks.

Colorado Springs is very close to a lot of amazing sights. Another close sight, besides the Garden of the Gods and Pikes Peak, is Helen Hunt Falls in North Cheyenne Cañon Park, a beautiful area just outside Colorado Springs. Helen Hunt Falls is named in honor of Helena Maria Hunt Jackson (October 15, 1830 to August 12, 1885), a poet and writer who became an activist on behalf off improved treatment of American Indians by the U.S. government.

I really enjoyed visiting Colorado Springs. It's a lovely place to visit with many great sights that are both beautiful and accessible.

Summer Morning in the Great SmokiesSummer Morning in the Great SmokiesA summer morning in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina.

In July, I visited Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina and Tennessee for the first time. The park is gorgeous, with lots of things to do and see. Above is an early morning photos of the Smoky Mountains in North Carolina.

Possibly the biggest attraction in the park is Cades Cove, an isolated valley in the Tennessee portion of the park.

If Cades Cove is not the largest draw to the park, then perhaps the bears are. I was only in the park for a short time and still encountered bears several times. The black bears aren't aggressive, as long as you keep your distance. Fortunately, I have a very long lens for my camera.

Besides Cades Cove and all the bears, I really enjoyed going up to the top of Kuwohi (formerly known as "Clingmans Dome"). Kuwohi is the tallest peak in the Park and it features a large observation platform. There's a long ramp (photo below) that leads up to the platform.

From atop Kuwohi, you can get a 360-degree, unobstructed view of the entire park. It's a great place to shoot a sunrise:

It's also a great place to shoot at dusk:

You can see why they call them the Smoky Mountains.

The park also features some great waterfalls. I particularly liked hiking the Trillium Trail along the Roaring Fork stream to Grotto Falls.

Another summer, another trip to Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague Island in Virginia. It's a lovey place to visit.

I spent some time photographing the ponies that reside on the island. I got some mares with their foals and some birds.

There are quite a few snowy egrets that spend time on the island as well. I took a few photos of them. They're distinguished by their white plumage and they have yellow feet that match their bills.

Some lovely sunsets can also be found in the refuge. I like the colors of the sky reflected in the water.

Great egrets can also be found in the refuge. Great egrets are generally larger than snowy egrets and they have black feet.

Some of the birds seem to be very comfortable around the ponies. The birds will even ride on the backs of the ponies.

Spring is here in Washington. And it has been here for a while. I took these photos back at the end of March and hoped to publish them quickly, but sometimes work and life just get very busy. So here we are in June.

The photo above features cherry blossoms on the National Mall, with the Capitol in the background. The photo below features the magnolia trees that were in bloom at the Capitol. I really like both photos and hope you like them too.

Irish weather

Foggy Sunrise in Kenmare BayFoggy Sunrise in Kenmare BayA foggy sunrise in Kenmare Bay in County Kerry, Ireland.

Ireland is famously green, even in October. Apparently, that's because it is very wet there. It rained several times while we were in Ireland. But it sure was beautiful. I shot the photo of Kenmare Bay (above) during breakfast. I really liked the fog and low clouds. Below is a photo I took of Sheen Falls. The Sheen River was so full of water after a rainstorm that the waterfall disappeared. The photo gives you a real sense of just how lush the vegetation can be in Ireland.

With so much rain, you will not be surprised to hear that Ireland has a lot of rainbows. We saw several while we were there. In the photo below, you can even see where the rainbow ends. Is there a pot of gold there?

This is the last of my blog posts on Ireland. We all had a lot of fun in Ireland and I was happy to bring home a bunch of nice photos and lots of happy memories.
